10 Pyramid

In math on Friday I introduced a fun game for practicing partners to make ten. You can play with 10 grid cards or a regular deck of cards (face cards are 10). To play you take fifteen cards and lay them out in a pyramid, starting with one card on top, each new row should overlap the row below (see pictures). Players take turns looking for cards that equal ten, but can only use exposed cards. If the can't make ten it is the other player's turn. They start by laying one new card down from the deck. Play continues until pyramid is gone or no more combinations can be made.

Science On Wednesday

We used our writing time to finish telling about Tuesday's science experiment. The kids are working hard to use words like first, next, then, etc. to write detailed steps for their science investigations. Here is an example of one student's science journal.

More Science

Our class was very excited to conduct an experiment to determine what would happen when a balloon filled with baking soda was placed on top of a bottle of vinegar. Most of the class hypothesized that it would explode!

They were a bit disappointed that all it did was inflate! 😃

Buddy Time

Yesterday we took some time to enjoy the snow with our fifth and sixth grade buddies. So much fun out in the "blizzard"!

Solids, Liquids and Gases, Oh My!

Our class has just started a unit on Matter. Over the next few weeks we will be conducting experiments to learn all about solids, liquids and gases. Yesterday students worked in their science journals.
After reading a book about Matter, kids wrote definitions for each state of matter and drew pictures to show an example.

In the afternoon we conducted an experiment to find out what happens when you put an ice cube in warm water. The kids are learning to write lab reports, just like real scientists!
We discovered that the ice melted and the water got cooler. The heat from the water caused the ice (solid) to turn into water (a liquid).
