Wednesday Learning

In math today we learned about symmetry. The kids worked with pattern blocks to build symmetrical designs. They were so proud of their creations!

This week we read a couple fiction books about the moon, "Mooncake" by Frank Asch and "little Bear Goes to the Moon" by Else Holmelund Minarik. Today we complete a Venn Diagram together to compare the two stories.

The Anciet Egypt group is really working hard on their pyramid project. Today the created mummies to go with their pyramid.

Another busy, fun day in first grade!

Ancient Egypt

Three students read a book about Ancient Egypt during reading group time. After reading they found interesting facts about pyramids from the book and rewrote them in their own words. Now they are building a pyramid out of sugar cubes and will display their facts with their creation.

Math, Math and More Math!!

We have had so many great things happening in math. Here are some photos of some of our favorite activities.

We learned a game called Sticks, which helps kids learn combinations that make five.

Our class had fun exploring shapes by making designs with pattern blocks and then graphing how many of each shape they used.

Another favorite shape activity was creating secret designs and then describing them to partners, so they can build them based on the directions.

Place value work.

Today we used marshmallows and toothpicks to build 2D and 3D shapes.
