Treasure Maps

Over the past month we have been studying maps and geography. The kids were introduced to some of the main characteristics of maps such as key/legend, a Compass Rose, symbols and landforms. They also had the opportunity to practice following directions using a map. As a final activity, we read How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long and used what we had learned about maps to create a treasure map. Here are some pictures of their final projects. They had a fun time painting, crumpling and tearing them to make them look old. I apologize that some of the photos are not going in the correct direction, I couldn't figure out how to get them to turn.
